New Energy Efficiency Rating for Commercial Offices: An Opportunity for Lighting Retrofits

Leading lighting manufacturer Tamlite believes a new building energy efficiency rating called NABERS UK could be the ‘next big thing’ to drive LED upgrade opportunities for the contracting market.

The NABERS UK building energy efficiency rating is rapidly gaining traction with specifiers and carbon-conscious building owners and operators. Its focus is to drive down operational energy in buildings - specifically commercial offices. Unlike other schemes - including BREEAM - NABERS UK requires a thorough metering strategy: it rates the actual energy performance of commercial offices based on metered energy consumption.

NABERS UK is also expected to encourage competition among buildings to become more sustainable. More efficient energy consumption also translates to lower energy costs, allowing building and business owners to invest the saved money where it is needed most.

Tamlite’s view is that NABERS is likely to kick-start new opportunities for energy efficiency focused projects in the commercial office buildings sector. There has been a notable spike in interest in this rating system from both consulting engineers and end customers. Over time, this will translate into a rise in energy efficiency focused projects - including LED retrofits. This presents an opportunity for contractors who are targeting decarbonisation projects within existing buildings.
