Sustainable building products and Passivhaus project supplier, Ecological Building Systems, will bring together experts from across Europe on Thursday 11th May 2017 to hold the UK’s first ever masterclass in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) design and construction.

Until now, the greatest period of timber building was between 1200 and 1700 AD. Fast forward over 300 years and we are now truly realising the full capabilities of this strong, sustainable and technically-advanced structural solution. Here, Alex Goodfellow, Chairman of the Structural Timber Association and Group Managing Director of Stewart Milne Timber Systems, shares his technical insight.

Oak is the most iconic of British hardwoods for structural use, but do you really understand it and the available options, and crucially its benefits over imported oak? Tom Barnes of Vastern Timber explains.

Timbmet’s solid walnut timber has been used to create a dramatic staircase for a multi-million pound new-build private home in Radlett, Hertfordshire. Built by Relic Homes, Aranee Lodge is a 6400 square foot, six-bedroom family residence, complete with formal reception rooms and a cinema room, as well as a master bedroom suite featuring a vaulted ceiling.

Timbmet’s extensive stockholding, efficient delivery network and strong working partnerships have proved a winning combination in the recent fulfilment of a challenging order.

The 2015 Structural Timber Awards were hailed a great success by industry leaders and innovators from across the timber construction sector and the 2016 event is set to build on this success. With two new additional award categories and a judging panel made up of renowned industry experts - organisers are preparing to receive a record number of entries as the awards grow in recognition and prestige.

Vastern Timber has unveiled Brimstone, the first commercially available thermally modified British timber, at Ecobuild 2016. Sourced exclusively from English and Welsh woodlands, the Brimstone range is ideal for cladding, decking, external joinery and furniture, and includes thermally modified ash, sycamore and poplar.

American cherry brings its natural colour and warmth to Europe’s largest passive office building.

The winners of the 45th annual Wood Awards were announced at a ceremony held last month at Carpenters’ Hall in London.
