Announced in the Engineering Prize Shortlist for this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF), the largest built area of Expo 2020 was masterplanned, designed and delivered by Hopkins Architects. The ‘Thematic Districts’ created a new piece of city, which housed over 87 new permanent buildings and hosted the work of more than 136 participating countries in last year’s COVID-delayed exhibition.

The Qaammat Pavilion, designed and built by Architect Konstantin Ikonomidis in cooperation with UNESCO and the Qeqqata Municipality, located in Sarfannguit, Greenland, has been crowned Popular Choice Winner of the Cultural (Pavilions) category in the A+Awards.

The Dutch city of Almere was built on reclaimed land that was once the Zuiderzee – a shallow sea bay in the Netherlands. The first house in this planned new town was completed in 1976. Since then, the city has grown to a population of nearly 220,000, which means Almere is well on its way to being the fifth-largest city in the country. However, it lacks a museum of note, befitting a metropolis of such stature. Local, provincial and national Government administrators agreed that a museum should be on top of the priority list to raise the city’s appeal.

The public plaza at 1221 Avenue of the Americas will become a dynamic public space – an inviting meeting place where people can enjoy the open air and views of surrounding landmark towers.

Hollaway Studio has designed the world’s first purpose-built, multi-storey skatepark in Folkestone, UK, as part of a major ongoing programme to regenerate the seaside town. The landmark building features three skateparks, a climbing wall (the tallest in the south east of England) and a boxing ring. It opens to the public this month.
