The Dutch city of Almere was built on reclaimed land that was once the Zuiderzee – a shallow sea bay in the Netherlands. The first house in this planned new town was completed in 1976. Since then, the city has grown to a population of nearly 220,000, which means Almere is well on its way to being the fifth-largest city in the country. However, it lacks a museum of note, befitting a metropolis of such stature. Local, provincial and national Government administrators agreed that a museum should be on top of the priority list to raise the city’s appeal.

Aytac Architects, an award-winning architecture and research practice based in Istanbul, Turkey, is proud to proceed with its development of the DE Bodrum Museum, a custom design for contemporary Turkish Artist Devrim Erbil. Located in Bodrum and set against the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, the design was recognised as a WA Award Cycle 40 winner in 2021 as part of the World Architecture Community Awards.

Angus Smith studied Architecture at Scott Sutherland School of Architecture. Following his education, he went on to work in an international practice that specialised in dramatic developments for Sol Kerzner and Southern Sun Hotels. After returning to the UK and completing his professional exams, Angus joined Space Solutions, delivering the Bon Accord Shopping Centre in Aberdeen. Since then, and after marrying and having a family, he has worked widely in the North East and the central belt of Scotland.
