Mansell Building Solutions appointed by Robertson North East to deliver light gauge steel frame for flagship 124-apartment Extra Care scheme in South Shields.
Mansell Building Solutions (MBS) has been appointed by Robertson Construction North East as the specialist light gauge steel frame (LGSF) contractor on a major new 124-apartment Extra Care development in South Shields. The project is being delivered by Robertson on behalf of Karbon Homes, in partnership with South Tyneside Council, on the former Chuter Ede School site on Benton Road.
We’re delighted to be able to extend the delivery of our off-site panelised light gauge steel frames across the North of England
The four-storey Extra Care scheme will provide high-quality, accessible homes that enable independent living for residents with varying levels of care needs. The development includes 25 dementia-friendly apartments, shared activity spaces, landscaped outdoor areas, and a public café that encourages wider community engagement. The project reflects a strategic commitment by Karbon Homes and South Tyneside Council to address the lack of supported accommodation options in the borough, helping those over the age of 18 with additional needs to live independently.
This Extra Care scheme will form an important part of South Tyneside’s wider regeneration activity and its strategic investment in quality housing solutions. The development’s combination of independent living, on-site care provision, and community-accessible facilities reflects best practice in inclusive design and long-term place-making.
MBS will deliver the full Voestalpine Metsec structural light gauge steel frame solution, drawing on its extensive experience in modern methods of construction (MMC). Off-site manufacture and on-site assembly of the Metframe system will support a faster, safer and more predictable programme, while reducing waste and enhancing overall build quality.
Angela Mansell, Managing Director at Mansell Building Solutions, commented:
“We’re delighted to be able to extend the delivery of our off-site panelised light gauge steel frames across the North of England. Mansell are proud to be working in partnership with Robertson North East on this fantastic scheme. Our collaborative approach meant we were able to bring our design teams together as early as possible to identify efficiencies and a clear aligned programme. This is our first scheme with the Robertson North East team, and we hope by building certainty at Benton Road, we can strengthen our relationship with the North East and grow our relationship across their Northern regional teams too.”
Elliot Robertson, Chief Executive Officer, Robertson Group, said: “Extra Care provision plays an incredibly important societal role and to be delivering a second scheme for Karbon and South Tyneside Council demonstrates their confidence in our team to create high-quality, sustainable homes that offer a supportive place to live.
“Karbon has developed an Extra Care model that combines specialist design, flexible care provision and community access, giving residents greater independence while ensuring support is available when required. It is with a great sense of pride that we can continue our relationships to deliver a building that enables this model to work in practice, contributes to long term care provision across the region and brings additional community wealth through our work on site.”
