An idyllic rural property, set in three peaceful acres in Sussex, hosts a garden building inspired by New England style weatherboard homes boasting scandi-style interiors and packed with rustic ‘shabby chic’ décor and vintage details.
Previously the cottage was a flat roofed, outdated building with rotting and dated cladding, but despite this, it was solid and watertight. The vision was to make it visually appealing by adding a faux pitched roof, a veranda, and an outdoor kitchen and wrapping in fresh timber. The cottage would then mirror the beautiful, New England style aesthetic of the main house.
New cladding was added using Douglas Fir freshly cut to bespoke measurements from a local sawmill and installed to match the main house. For wood protection, Osmo WR Base Coat 4001 Clear was brush applied to offer a superior water repellent base layer and resistance against blue stain, rot and insect attack.
For the perfect weatherproof white, the exterior was then brush applied over the base coat with Osmo Country Colour 2101 White, transforming the 500 square foot garden cottage with a high coverage and extremely UV-resistant opaque wood coating. The cured Country Colour coating is now a microporous, breathable wood finish which does not crack, peel or flake throughout the changing English seasons.
The owner explains: “I chose Osmo because it offers superior protection, great coverage and can be reapplied without sanding, which is incredibly important to me, as I do all the decorating at our property! The durability beats a paint finish and I’m confident it will continue to look great for years to come. I’ve used Osmo previously and have always been delighted with the high quality result.”
Now finished, the cottage looks exceptional alongside the main house and has created a new tranquil rural space to use for the owner, complete with a sweeping veranda, fire pit seating and BBQ area, making it the perfect spot for outdoor living.
