November 2016 issue

As the industry gears up to Ecobuild 2017 – the sector’s leading event for professionals in the sustainable built environment – the organisers this year are honing in on what sustainability means to different areas of the supply chain. In order to successfully deliver energy-efficient buildings, the industry must be consistent in their approach and processes, from concept to completion.

To open dialogue amongst industry leaders, Ecobuild has taken to social media with its campaign #SustainabilityIs – an opportunity for anyone to respond with what the term ‘sustainability’ really means to them. It has received an overwhelming response since its launch. Take a look at our news pages inside this issue to see an interesting selection of answers.

For a more in-depth insight into Ecobuild’s efforts to help redefine the future of sustainability, turn to page 11 where its Brand Director, Martin Hurn, reflects on the evolution of the term and highlights the need for the industry to come together to create a common definition.

Elsewhere in this issue, Associate Solicitor at Gullands, Andrew Clarke, looks at the impact of health and safety sentencing guidelines on the construction sector, Soapworks’ Manager, Jennifer Bamber, addresses the growing trend for flexible office design and Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association, discusses how structural timber frame can help to ensure housing projects are made weathertight quickly.
