Surface Design Show uncovers superior surfaces for 2018

For more than 10 years, the Surface Design Show has been connecting innovative and exciting materials with an audience of architects, specifiers and designers. The Surface Design Show – held at the Business Design Centre, Islington, from 6 to 8th February – is the only event in the UK that focuses solely on interior and exterior surfaces.

It is the place where industry professionals can immerse themselves in the latest materials for the built environment and gain new insights and network with like-minded designers, architects and suppliers.

This year, over 200 exhibitors will highlight the very best in surface design. Returning exhibitors include V4 Wood Flooring, Grestec and Pintark by Loco Design which produces beautiful hand-crafted surfaces in multiple combinations of materials and finishes for interior and furniture applications. Whilst new exhibitors include SoundSpace, Daedalian Glass and Bolton Textiles, which will be launching a number of collections at the show including Sinclaire-Barbarini – an exciting collection of weaves inspired by tapestries from around the globe.

Christopher Newton, Director of the Surface Design Show, comments: “Materials really matter to architects and designers, that’s why the Surface Design Show has become such an important source of knowledge and inspiration. It’s not just the variety of materials being displayed by our exhibitors that excite them, it’s also the presentations, the international awards and the displays of the most innovative materials currently available.”

The Surface Design Show 2018 will once again have a packed programme of events all designed to inspire and engage. Some of the events included will be the opening night debate. Organised in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and New London Architecture (NLA), it will highlight the issues facing young Londoners as they seek to become homeowners. RIBA President, Ben Derbyshire, will lead a panel of experts debating the topic ‘A crisis for the next generation – is London just for the wealthy?’ Peter Murray, Chairman and Co-Founder of NLA, will chair the event which takes place from 18:30 until 19:30 on Tuesday 6th February.

The ever-popular PechaKucha Evening, hosted by Phil Coffey of Coffey Architects, takes place on Wednesday 8th February at 18:30. An informal and fun presentation of inspirational slides, the confirmed line-up includes Hannah Corlett, David Kohn and Jessica Reynolds.

Surface Spotlight Live, which debuted in 2016, is an exciting opportunity for architects and designers to discover the newest and best materials in the industry. The 2018 display will be collectively curated by trend expert Sally Angharad, Treniq – an international interiors network – and Colour Hive, which forecasts trends and colours.

Debuting in 2017, Stone Gallery reflects the rapidly growing stone market in the UK and the important relationship between stone and surface design. Officially supported by Stone Federation GB, the first Stone Gallery attracted exhibitors from Europe and beyond; all looking to link up with the international architects and designers that make London the world’s design hub.

Light is a vital partner to surface design, changing interior and exterior surfaces dramatically. Now in its fifth year, Light School, presented by Light Collective and supported by the Institution of Lighting Professionals, will help attendees discover the best of new lighting design and learn about the important partnership between surface and light.
